What you don’t know about wedding cake
Parallel to the wedding dress, the wedding cake is the other element which will most arouse curiosity in the guests; it is about the undisputed protagonist of the second evening, of the dessert par excellence of the wedding reception, of a symbol, which represents the conclusion of the wedding and the beginning of a new life toghether for the couple.
For this reason, the wedding cake, whose origins date back even to ancient Greece, is one of the details of the ceremony that must be taken care of in the smallest details, as it must “marry” with style of the newlywedes and with the scnography of the location. It should not be underestimated, quite the contrary!
Not only must it fit well into the context, but there are also some good manners, some traditional gestures, to stick to during the cake cutting: according to tradition, it is the groom who has to engrave the cake first and the bride has to finish it, but for the whole process both will have to hold the knife, she with the right hand, he with his hand above her. After cutting, the bride will have to offer the first slice to her husband, then to the mother-in-law, then to her mother, to the father-in-law and finally to her father; it is a gesture that symbolizes the successful union, not only of the spouses, but of the whole family.
Its form, its colors and its structure evoke symbolically many meanings linked to the future of the spouses. Its most common form is the circular one, a symbol of heavenly protection, its classic color, white, it is inspired by purity, while the risers that support the various layers of the cake would represent the ladder of married life, in which each level refers to a small obstacle to joy and eternal love.
